Why should you choose Fairtrade?

Why Choose Fairtrade image.jpg

Fairtrade is about helping farmers and workers in developing countries receive fair trade terms, so they can afford to live their lives sustainably. There are more than 1.66 million farmers and workers in Fairtrade Certified producer organisations, of which there are 1,411 organisations across 73 countries.

When you choose Fairtrade you help the farmers to have;

1.       Better Prices
Farmers in developing countries receive better prices for the raw materials and products they sell when you purchase Fairtrade products, making their work more sustainable as they receive the needed income to farm and live.

2.       Decent Working Conditions

Farmers and workers can work in safe and acceptable working conditions, with no slavery or child labour used.

3.       Local Sustainability

Makes the local economy better with farmers taking control of their own businesses and the profits staying in the local community. Workers on Fairtrade certified plantations invested 33% of their Fairtrade Premium in housing improvements in 2016.

4.       Equality

Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

As a result = Sustainable Quality Products

Fairtrade products are higher quality and have a great taste as they are often from smaller farms where farmers take pride in their work and pay closer attention to detail, making sure the product is the best they can produce. Also with a fair price they can invest more into their farm to develop their processes and products, small producer organisations spend 48% of their Fairtrade premium in services for farmers, like provision of agricultural tools or farmer training.

It’s all about Fair-trade! Remember Fairtrade Fortnight runs from 25th February to 10th March, kick-start your campaign now!

Seasons Greetings!

2018 is drawing to a close! - the Nutshell Team enjoyed an End of Year Meal to celebrate & thank everyone for all the hard work this year! Of course, suited in their Christmas jumpers to help the worthy cause #savethechildren

We would like to wish all our partners – Customers and Suppliers, a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2019 and thank our customers for their business throughout 2018.

#teamhotchocolate

Tis the season to be jolly with hot chocolate - everyone likes a bit of silky hot cocoa and there’s nothing more warming on a winters day than an indulgent hot chocolate.

The phrase ‘selling like hot cakes’ has become ‘selling like hot chocolate’ here at Nutshell over the past few weeks. So, we thought we would join in the fun by creating a few hot chocolates for ourselves.

The Nutshell tasting team set to work, frothing milk and measuring out the hot chocolate powder, swirling it all into an exquisite hot chocolate drink. Trays of little hot chocolate tasters where passed around the office and as we all sipped the various hot chocolates, the smiles around the office grew as big as ever!

We tasted four different blends - two of the blends received the same number of votes as the ‘best hot chocolate’. So, our chief taster Jonathan will have to spend some more time dwelling over his tasting notes on these, or maybe even MORE sampling – lucky him!

We already sell some of the most luxurious and distinctive hot chocolates – our instant Poldermill Chocolates are always hitting the spot, however we don’t rest on our laurels - we always like trying something new! Watch this space…

You may be wondering how do I create the perfect hot chocolate? To create a make-with-milk hot chocolate drink, follow these simple steps:

1.       Measure out the hot chocolate into your mug (this is usually around 3 heaped table spoons for one serving).

2.       Heat up the milk in a separate jug, to 85 degrees Celsius (this is usually around 200ml of milk for 3 table spoons of powder). Ideally use the steamer on your coffee machine to heat the milk as this also gives you a nice frothy milk topping.

3.       Pour 20ml of the hot milk into you mug and mix the hot chocolate powder into a thick paste.

4.       Add the rest of the milk to the paste and stir gently.

5.       Add toppings such as mini marshmallows, cream and chocolate flakes at your desire. If you are looking for a very seasonal hot chocolate, why not try adding some Gingerbread syrup?!

6.       Drink to your hearts content and repeat.

To create a using an instant hot chocolate, follow the same steps but using water instead of milk.

Happy hot chocolate drinking.

They looked great! We committed ourselves to donate £5 for every photo sent back to us of our customers coffee morning. Thank you to everyone’s support in this,

National Burger Day! What is the most popular sauce?

LinkedIn Post.jpg

It's National Burger Day, so thinking about all things that go with burgers...

What is the most popular sauce?!

Some would say sauce is a very important necessity with all foods, but with so many available that spoil us for choice, which sauce should you choose? There are a large number of new sauces that have come to the market over the recent years (including the Heinz Smokey Baconnaise we have just been trying here at Nutshell) but it seems the good old sauces are always still top of the pops.

Let’s take a look at the most popular sauces at Nutshell over the past year…

1.       Heinz Tomato Ketchup
No surprise here as Tomato Ketchup has always been one of the most popular sauces in the world! But it shows the old faithful still goes on. In the past year Nutshell sold nearly 3 times as much as all the other sauces put together!

2.       HP Brown Sauce
Another iconic sauce that’s still very popular and often served as an option alongside Tomato Ketchup, although it doesn’t quite drum up the same volume! That said it is the 2nd most popular, mainly due to its uniqueness.

3.       Heinz Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise - a sauce you can have with anything! Hence it’s up there as people like the creaminess and don’t just use it in sandwiches and salads as it commonly would have been.

4.       Heinz BBQ Sauce
A truly legendary sauce, one of the tastes of summer, reminder of the fun times around the BBQ. Long live summer. Often used as a marinade for meat, to give it a great flavour.

5.       Heinz Tartare Sauce
A surprise? Maybe not the sauce you expected to see near the top of the list, but a ‘must have’ with your seafood dish.

What does the future hold? Everyone likes to try new sauces and new flavours are always welcomed, will Tomato Ketchup get knocked off its perch….?

The team here at Nutshell are often found doing trials on new sauces to continually improve our product range. We’re like bees around a honey pot when a new sauce comes in! Any reason to roll in the bacon butties (or whatever suits)!

Looking for a bit of punch in your sauce? Check out the Heinz Firecracker sauce – a smokey, tomato based sauce with a chipotle spicy kick. It goes perfectly with pizzas, meats or anything you want to spice up!

Visit from John Glen, MP for Salisbury and South Wiltshire

The Team at Nutshell were delighted to welcome Mr John Glen, MP for Salisbury and South Wiltshire, on Friday 22nd June 2018, to show how much our trade is interwoven with Europe and to discuss the potential impact Brexit could have on the business and local economy.

As Economic Secretary to the Treasury and City Minister, John was very interested to understand the commercial and economic implications of Brexit first hand and reassured us that the Chancellor was fully aware of the need of continuing free movement of goods with Europe. It was excellent to be able to give him a tour of our new offices and factory, and meet all our staff.

It was such a beautiful day, that before he dashed off to meet with Prince Charles in Salisbury City Centre, we even took the opportunity to capture a company photo! What a great team!

Following his visit to Nutshell, Mr John Glen said he’d “Spent an informative time this morning at Nutshell Portions on Churchfields Industrial Estate in Salisbury. It’s a fantastic local business exporting single portion food and beverage products across the European Union. Managing Partner Jonathan Moffat showed me round the offices and factory floor where I got to meet all the staff. We then had a useful meeting where he set out his views on Brexit and stressed to me the importance of maintaining frictionless trade with our partners in the European Union. I assured him that the government is doing all it can to ensure that we have a deal that respects the referendum result but continues to deliver a future trading relationship that is as seamless as possible.”
